We love custom upholstered banquettes. These are recent upholstered banquettes that were installed in two separate homes in Naperville, Illinois. Both banquettes are very comfortable, are made for tough daily use and offer an added touch to our clients home decor style and personality.
The custom upholstery in these two banquettes was accomplished using hard cushions which are mounted semi-permanently to allow trouble free daily use. Soft, removable cushions could have also been used but hard cushions will provide stable seats and backs without the worry of continual cushion rearranging. The hard cushions consist of high resiliency foam (HR Foam), wrapped in quality dacron over plywood bases that were cut to fit the various sizes, shapes and miter patterns of the seats and backs. Both banquettes were upholstered in wonderful Fabricut upholstery vinyl fabrics that have the look and feel of real leather with amazing durability ratings.
The Prairie Street banquette pictured below was built with an angled back which allowed us to use straight pieces of 2″ firm rated HR foam to form the comfortable back cushions. Angled backs do require compound angles at the center corners which was perfectly accomplished by templating the banquette before the upholstery stage began. The seats were padded with 3″ HR foam in an extra firm rating which provides comfort and will last for many years of daily use. The finished product is quite wonderful, enhancing our clients home decor and offering a utilitarian seating arrangement for their family. Interior design meets pure functionality in our custom upholstered seating.
The Centennial Street banquette is similar in its trapezoidal shape but was built with straight backs which require a slightly different approach as far as the upholstery design and the foam materials used. With this banquette, in order to provide a comfortable back, we used 6″ HR foam in a medium density that was shaped in a wedge to allow for a comfortable back angle. The custom cut foam is comfortable while adding visual appeal to the banquette as well. All of the upholstery in this banquette was also crafted using hard cushions to keep everything in place no matter what our clients small children can throw at it.
These are only two examples of upholstery for custom banquettes but the possibilities are really quite endless. Banquettes can be built-in as these examples show, be free-standing and handcrafted as furniture pieces and can be designed in any size or configuration imaginable. There are many options to consider when planning for upholstered seating and banquettes but comfort and interior design style can be combined with well planned custom upholstery.
